On September 12, the Supreme Court of India, in a bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan issued significant directions to improve conditions in beggars homes across the country . The case arose from the 2000 Lampur Beggars’ Home tragedy in Delhi, where contaminated water caused cholera and gastroenteritis leading to multiple deaths . The Court held that failure to maintain humane conditions violates the constitutional right to life with dignity .

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment must notify uniform guidelines within three months and States/UTs must comply within 6 months .
