Persona Non Grata – It means unwelcome person”. A person not welcome or An unwelcome person.
In diplomacy, it allows a host country to expel a foreign diplomat without explanation.

  • Persona = Person

  • Non = Not

  • Grata = Pleasing / Welcome / Accepted

Legal Insights –

  • Codified under Article 9 of the Vienna Convention (1961).
  • It is the severest legal form of diplomatic censure, short of breaking ties.
  • The individual must leave the country, usually within 48–72 hours.
  • It is a sovereign legal right — not a violation, but a limit on diplomatic immunity.
