On May 29, 2025, the Delhi High Court directed YouTuber Mohak Mangal to remove parts of his video that allegedly defamed news agency ANI. The court also ordered comedian Kunal Kamra to delete a tweet calling ANI “mafia” and “thugs.” Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair, who agreed to delete his tweet voluntarily, was removed from the case.

KEY ASPECT

The court stressed that freedom of speech doesn’t permit using defamatory or irresponsible language, especially when directed at a media organization.

LEGAL INSIGHTS

  • Defamation law protects reputation against false and harmful content.
  • Use of words like “Hafta Wasooli” and “Gunda Raj” was considered derogatory.
  • Copyright infringement was also raised over unauthorized use of ANI’s footage.
  • Voluntary removal of content can influence court’s treatment of parties.

IMPACT

This decision sets a clear boundary for online creators and influencers regarding public commentary on institutions and individuals.

WHY IT MATTERS

In the digital era, content spreads fast. This ruling reminds creators to be responsible and fair, balancing free speech with respect for reputations.
