CJI Chandrachud Reflects on Childhood Corporal Punishment at Juvenile Justice Symposium

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, while speaking at a symposium on juvenile justice in Kathmandu, shared a personal experience of facing corporal punishment in school. He recounted pleading with his teacher not to cane his hand and how this incident left a lasting impact on him. Chandrachud emphasized the importance of treating children with care, citing a recent case where the Supreme Court granted medical termination of pregnancy to a 14-year-old rape survivor. He highlighted the need to safeguard children’s rights and mentioned the progress made in India and Nepal in implementing juvenile justice legislations. Chandrachud’s remarks underscored the long-term effects of childhood experiences and the importance of protecting and nurturing children.

Mumbai Court Denies Anticipatory Bail to MNS Leader in Extortion Case

Mumbai Sessions Court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Avinash Jadhav, who was accused of extorting Rs 5 crores from a gold dealer. The court noted that all the charges against Jadhav, including extortion, were bailable, so there was no need for anticipatory bail. Jadhav’s lawyers argued against his arrest without notice, but the court ruled in favor of the prosecution. This decision came as Jadhav was attending a rally for another politician, and police were reportedly on their way to arrest him. The court’s decision highlighted the legal consequences of the charges against Jadhav and the judicial process regarding bail in such cases.

Bombay High Court Reserves Order on Bail Petition of Elgar Parishad Case Accused

The Bombay High Court reserved its order on the default bail petition of Surendra Gadling, an accused in the 2018 Elgar Parishad case. Gadling’s appeal challenged a previous order of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court that denied him default bail. His plea argued that the police had exceeded the legal time limit to file chargesheets. The court heard arguments from both sides, with Gadling’s counsel emphasizing the issue of liberty. The Additional Solicitor General (ASG) representing the NIA argued against the appeal, citing previous court decisions. The High Court’s decision will have implications for Gadling’s legal standing in the ongoing case, which has drawn attention for its implications on freedom of speech and dissent.
