Supreme Court Stresses Social Transformation in Property Rights Case:

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, emphasized the Constitution’s aim of social transformation, stating it’s perilous to deny the community’s stake in private property for the common good. The bench’s remarks came during a hearing on whether privately-owned resources can be deemed communal assets. They highlighted the relevance of Article 39(b) and cautioned against an overly restrictive interpretation, noting the Constitution’s intent for societal welfare.

Hemant Soren Urges Expedited Judgment from Supreme Court:

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, approached the Supreme Court seeking expedited judgment on his plea challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. Soren’s counsel, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, cited undue delay by the state high court in pronouncing the verdict. Justice Sanjiv Khanna assured prompt action, indicating the matter’s priority and adherence to prescribed procedures.

NGO Petitions Supreme Court for Probe into Alleged Electoral Bonds Scam:

Common Cause, along with the Centre for Public Interest Litigation, petitioned the Supreme Court for a Special Investigation Team (SIT)-led probe into the alleged electoral bonds scam. The plea alleges quid pro quo agreements between corporations and political parties through electoral bond donations. It seeks a thorough investigation into the money trail, implicating central agencies and demanding recovery of funds involved in potential wrongdoing.

GOVERNMENT SCHEMES 

Kabir Puraskar Scheme:

Objective: The Kabir Puraskar Scheme, initiated in 1990, aims to foster communal, caste, and ethnic harmony by recognizing acts of physical and moral courage during communal riots, caste conflicts, or ethnic clashes. The scheme acknowledges individuals who demonstrate bravery in saving lives and properties across community lines.

Eligibility: All Indian citizens, except members of the Armed Forces, Police Forces, and recognized fire services, are eligible for the award. Eligible acts must involve danger to the rescuer’s life while saving the lives and properties of members of another community, caste, or ethnic group.

Criteria: The scheme categorizes awards into three grades based on the level of courage displayed:

  1. Grade-I: For exceptional acts of courage resulting in grave danger or permanent incapacitation.
  2. Grade-II: For notable acts of courage under dangerous circumstances leading to bodily injury.
  3. Grade-III: For acts demonstrating courage and promptitude in saving lives and properties.

Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension Scheme:

Objective: Launched in 1972, the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension Scheme aims to honor living freedom fighters and their families by providing pensions as a token of respect. The scheme recognizes the sacrifices made by freedom fighters during India’s struggle for independence.

Eligibility: Freedom fighters who suffered imprisonment or other forms of hardship during the national movement are eligible for the pension. Eligible dependents include mothers, fathers, widows/widowers, and unmarried daughters. The pension ceases for unmarried daughters upon marriage or attaining independence.

Criteria: The scheme defines various categories of freedom fighters based on their contribution and suffering during the independence movement. Pension amounts vary according to the category, with additional provisions for dependent parents and eligible daughters.
