LAW AND GOVERNANCE 

NEW CRIMINAL LAWS IMPLEMENTED ACROSS INDIA

  • Modern Justice System
    India introduces the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, replacing colonial-era laws. New features include Zero FIR, electronic registration of complaints, and mandatory videography of crime scenes.
  • Technological Advancements and Training
    The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and National Informatics Centre (NIC) have updated their systems for seamless integration with new laws. Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) has trained over 40,000 officers, and public awareness campaigns are ongoing.

CJI CHANDRACHUD ON JUDICIAL ROLES

  • Judges as Public Servants
    Chief Justice DY Chandrachud emphasized that judges should be seen as public servants, not deities. He highlighted the need for compassion and empathy in their roles.
  • Constitutional Morality
    Chandrachud stressed the importance of constitutional morality, urging judges to help achieve the society envisioned by the Constitution, particularly starting at the district judiciary level.

CALCUTTA HC FINES FOR FALSE CASE

  • Penalty for Misleading Court
    The Calcutta High Court imposed fines on both the petitioner and defendant for filing and withdrawing a false post-poll violence case. The fines will fund renovations of women’s toilets in the High Court.
  • Amicable Settlement
    The false allegations of post-poll violence were amicably settled, with the fines serving as a deterrent against future misleading cases.
