BCI ISSUES SHOW CAUSE NOTICE TO DSK LEGAL FOR ADVERTISEMENT FEATURING BOLLYWOOD ACTOR

Case Name: Bar Council of India vs. DSK Legal

The entry statement was issued by the Bar Council of India (BCI) to the Indian law firm DSK Legal for professional misbehaviour regarding its publicity video featuring Bollywood actor Rahul Bose. The BCI asserted that legal practice should depend on meritorious work and should not feature any advertisements. Therefore, the firm has been told to take down the ad from every space.

Legal Provision 
  • Rule 36 of BCI Rules prohibits advocates from soliciting work through advertisements.
  • The BCI deems promotional activities by legal professionals unethical and a violation of legal ethics.

SC GRANTS ACID ATTACK SURVIVORS RIGHT TO SEEK LEGAL AID FOR COMPENSATION DELAYS

Case Name: Acid Survivors Saahas Foundation vs. Union of India & Ors. | W.P.(C) No. 1252/2023

The Supreme Court has now opened the doors of state legal services authorities popularly known as SLSA for acid attack survivors so that it could come to their assistance in case of delays in receiving compensation awarded by these SLSAs. Additional time was granted by the Court to the Union and the states to file their replies. The victims are to be assured by SLSA of taking them to treatment in private hospitals.

  • Laxmi vs. Union of India (2015) set compensation and rehabilitation guidelines for acid attack victims.
  • Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 empowers SLSAs to provide legal aid and ensure justice.

SC COLLEGIUM RECOMMENDS TRANSFER OF ORISSA HC ACTING CHIEF JUSTICE ARINDAM SINHA

Transfer of Justice Arindam Sinha

The transfer of Justice Arindam Sinha, Acting Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, to Allahabad High Court has been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium. With this, he will be the fourth senior-most judge at Allahabad HC, if it is approved. His parent High Court is Calcutta.

Legal Provision 
  • Article 222 of the Constitution of India empowers the President to transfer High Court judges based on Collegium recommendations.
  • SC Collegium System governs judicial appointments and transfers.
