In a move to strengthen legal aid mechanisms across the country the President of India has nominated Justice Surya Kant, judge of the Supreme Court of India as the new Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) . The appointment which takes effect from 14th May 2025 follows the established convention of appointing the 2nd senior most judge of the Supreme Court to this post . Justice Surya Kant replaced Justice BR Gavai with the goal of advancing the mission of NALSA of delivering accessible and free legal aid to all especially the underprivileged .
