CIC Reprimands EC Over RTI Response Failure
The Central Information Commission (CIC) has reprimanded the Election Commission (EC) for failing to respond to an RTI plea regarding the action taken on a representation concerning the credibility of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines. Former IAS officer M G Devasahayam filed the RTI seeking details on the representation’s handling. Despite the mandatory 30-day period, the EC didn’t respond, prompting Devasahayam to escalate the issue to the CIC. The CIC expressed severe displeasure over the EC’s conduct and directed it to provide a written explanation for the violation. Notable professionals and former civil servants had raised concerns about the EVMs and VVPAT machines, urging urgent responses from the EC.
Supreme Court to Hear Arvind Kejriwal’s Plea Against Arrest in Money Laundering Case
The Supreme Court is set to hear Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case related to the liquor policy. Kejriwal’s petition, scheduled for April 15 before a two-judge bench, asserts that his arrest was based on unreliable documents and motivated statements by co-accused turned approvers. The plea seeks his release and declares the arrest illegal. The Delhi High Court had recently dismissed Kejriwal’s plea, alleging his involvement in using proceeds of crime and demanding kickbacks in the liquor policy scandal. Kejriwal is presently in Tihar Jail until the hearing.
