JACOBITE SYRIAN CHURCH HELD IN CONTEMPT BY SUPREME COURT FOR WILLFULLY DISOBEYING

Case Title: V Venu & Others v. St. Mary’s Orthodox Church (Odakkal Palli) | SLP(C) No. 26064-26069/2024

Recently, the Apex Court ruled Jacobite Syrian Church in willfully disobeying the handover of church administration to Malankara Orthodox fraction as per the 1934 Constitution.
The Supreme Court held members of the Jacobite Syrian Church in contempt for defying judgments Six churches in Ernakulam and Palakkad districts were ordered to be handed over. Common amenities like burial grounds and schools must remain accessible to both factions.

SUPREME COURT DISPOSES HABEAS CORPUS PLEA FOR FARMER LEADER

Case Title: Jagjit Singh Dallewal thr: Guninder Kaur Gill v. Union of India & Others | W.P.(Crl.) No. 491/2024


The Supreme Court closed a habeas corpus plea after Punjab police released farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, allegedly detained before his protest fast. The Court stressed the right to peaceful protest but cautioned against public inconvenience. Protests at Punjab-Haryana borders stem from demands for promised Minimum Support Prices for crops.

SUPREME COURT ACQUITS ACCUSED IN RAPE AND MURDER CASE

Case Title: Ashok v. State of Uttar Pradesh | 2024 LiveLaw (SC) 941

The Supreme Court overturned a rape and murder conviction, citing lack of legal aid during trial. The accused was unrepresented during key phases, breaching Article 21. The Court criticized prosecutors for failing to ensure a fair trial and highlighted the accused’s right to free and effective legal representation.
