INDUS WATER TREATY DEBATE IN RAJYA SABHA

Overview: Suspension of Indus Water Treaty in Context of Operation Sindoor

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during a Rajya Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor, called the decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan the “most critical geopolitical step.” He emphasized that in the face of cross-border hostility, India must leverage strategic tools like water-sharing pacts to assert national interest.

  • The Indus Waters Treaty, 1960 — a bilateral water-distribution agreement brokered by the World Bank.
  • Article 62 of the Vienna Convention – To suspend it on grounds of fundamental change in circumstances or breach by Pakistan.
